07/12/2005: "Back From Hurricane Hell"

Well, we're back! The whole experience was a nightmare, but it could have been worse. We were mostly spared--Cindy actually hit us harder. So I'm VERY grateful. Of course, now we've got Emily on the way, and she's expected to turn into a hurricane within the next 36 hours. And for fun, there are two more systems behind her.

So I'm not even going to unpack. I'm leaving my trees anchored, my sandbags up, my containers of water filled, and my furniture wrapped in plastic.

This week I am, however, going to get hurricane shutters and boards for my windows. Tomorrow I'm getting my car prepared for another evacuation (and getting some things checked--I nearly got into two accidents because either my brakes or tires failed,) and buying plywood and clips. Emily, if it comes this way, should be making herself unwelcome by mid-week next week.

This sucks.

But thank you for all the well wishes and prayers. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. Things could have been very, very bad. I hope everyone had a productive and exciting week (and YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY Amy!!!!!) I'll try and catch up on blogs over the next few days.

And since I love the hell generator, here's my hurricane one:

Yeash! What did you guys do to piss off the weather gods? I'm glad you're home and that you're prepared. But man, what a drag!

Glad you weren't hit too hard. Hopefully that trend will continue.

I missed the excitement, but I'm afraid that I might be to blame. I'm summering in MD this year, and I am a Tornado Goddess. Tornadoes have formed near every town and city I've spent at least 3 months is *no matter how rare they are* in the area. That means that Purdue had to cancel classes for the first time in who knows how long because of a tornado warning, which terrified long-term residents. It means that the roof of my childhood house was nearly removed one year, and I've spent more times hiding under a matterss in the hall than I care to count. That means that Albuquerque, NEW FREAKIN' MEXICO, has had a tornado since I've moved there--something so rare that crazy locals all went out to see it. And it means that I'm already dragging tornadoes toward the eastern seaboard. When does the central east get tornadoes, for goodness sake? Well, this summer, there's been at least one, spawned my storms of a dying hurricanes that hit FL first.

I'd better not move to Kansas, that's all I have to say... The entire state would be flattened.

good idea on the shutters and boards. What a pain to have to get ready for possibly another hit. It's going to be a long season, isn't it?

Hang in there!

I think you're smart to just leave everything prepped for the next storm. Maybe you could summer in Canada? It must be such a hassle to live like that, then flee, then go back, afraid of what you'll find. Glad you guys weathered this round well. Stay safe and keep us posted!

Larissa...how upsetting all this must be for you! I hope you and yours continue to stay safe!

Just wondering about you and how you're doing ...

Thanks, everyone! We're doing great, but busy. I decided to take down some of the preparations I made when we didn't have boards (like wrapping the furniture and putting away breakables,) but I'm leaving a lot of the other preps up. Maybe for the season! crazy
