The Truth:
A lot of people buy “free-range” eggs as a way to help prevent the cruel practices of the “caged bird” egg industry, but if you think you’re getting “cruelty-free” eggs, you are wrong. Free-range hens are slaughtered when their production goes down at about a year old. Worse, the hens are purchased from hatcheries where the baby male chicks of egg laying strains are “discarded.” Since they don’t grow fast enough to be raised profitably for meat, they are commonly crushed or ground up alive, suffocated in trash cans, or killed by gassing.
Eggs, whether from free-range hens or caged hens, are NOT cruelty-free.
